We are truly flattered that there has been so much interest over the years on the Internet in copying our site content. Since we started this web site in 1995, as we have brought out so much unique and helpful information, we have found a great number of sites copying our content and publishing it on their own sites. Maybe you’re one who wants to do that.
But, do you really want to get banned? Copying content from this web site will get your web site banned from search engines, and we’ll explain how.
Copying our content is stupid for two reasons:
- Search engines monitor duplicate web site content. Google in particular will not give any significant ranking to web pages with duplicate content. Think about it-what does your web page add when you’ve copied someone else’s content? It adds nothing, and that’s how Google and other search engines treat it.
- But the killer, from your standpoint, is that we will report you to the search engines. We have tools at our disposal for searching out duplicate content. Our site is copyright protected, and we will find out and report violations to the authorities at Google and Yahoo. The result for you: your site will be banned from Google and from Yahoo search indexes. We have reported hundreds of violations so far. If you’d like your site to be similarly banned, then go ahead and try copying our content.
And we believe that if you are an employee and copy content from our site, that your job will be at risk. Your employer will find out, through the standard notification process, and we don’t think they will be happy that you got their web site banned from search engines. At the very least, you will look like you don’t know what you’re doing.
Part of us is flattered that so many people over the years have found our information so valuable. We were one of the first cosmetic dentistry web sites on the Internet, and have been a content innovator in many areas of information. So thank you for the compliment. But when you copy our content, Google downgrades our page a little and yours a lot. The result: We are penalized for your illegal activity. So, to protect our standing as the world’s most heavily trafficked cosmetic dentistry web site, we will aggressively pursue any violations.
The lesson: Save yourself some trouble and write your own content. Copying is not smart—not smart at all. The honorable and smart thing to do, if you like our content, is to link to it.
This web site’s original launch date: Dec. 2, 1995. It was published as www.cosmeticdent.com and then in 1999 we changed the domain name to www.mynewsmile.com.
